Prototyping a real-time healthcare analytics engine

Prototype real-time analytics engine with on AWS Kinesis / Lambda / HealthLake - fully managed, HIPAA-eligible service that stores, transforms, and analyzes healthcare data using the Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR R4) standard

  • AWS Kinesis
  • AWS Lambda
  • AWS HealthLake
  • FHIR R4

At Lumeris I prototyped a real-time analytics engine for healthcare data on AWS.

The building blocks

  • AWS Kinesis collected data as a real-time stream.
  • AWS Lambda processed records as they arrived.
  • AWS HealthLake, a fully managed, HIPAA-eligible service, stored, transformed and analyzed the data.
  • FHIR R4, the healthcare interoperability standard HealthLake uses, gave all of it one consistent shape.

Why it mattered

Healthcare data arrives from many sources in many formats. Normalizing it to FHIR R4 and processing it as it arrives, rather than in nightly batches, points toward analytics that can act on new information quickly.
