Migrating the primary analytics database to AWS RDS

Co-led AWS migration of primary analytics engine to AWS RDS

  • AWS RDS
  • AWS CloudFormation
  • SQL Server

I co-led the migration of Lumeris' primary analytics database from on-premises infrastructure to AWS RDS. It was a two-person effort, me and an application architect, on a system the business depended on.

The move

The database ran on SQL Server and moved to SQL Server on AWS RDS, Amazon's managed relational database service. AWS CloudFormation defined the infrastructure as code.

Why it was demanding

A primary analytics database is business critical: other systems and teams rely on it every day, so the new environment had to work correctly from the start.

The result

The analytics database moved to managed AWS infrastructure, which later internal tools, such as the RDS management dashboard, built on.
